WHat is Gestalt Therapy?
An experiential, present-centered approach to awareness and wholeness
Gestalt therapy is grounded in the understanding that growth emerges through awareness. Rather than analyzing experience from a distance, Gestalt invites us into direct contact with what is unfolding in the present moment, thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, impulses, and relational dynamics. In this way, therapy becomes less about interpreting the past and more about discovering what is alive now.
From a Gestalt perspective, many difficulties arise when experience becomes interrupted, suppressed, or pushed outside of awareness. Emotions may be held back, needs may go unexpressed, or parts of the self may be disowned in order to adapt to relationships or expectations. Over time, this can lead to a sense of fragmentation, disconnection, or feeling not fully oneself. Gestalt therapy gently brings these experiences back into awareness, allowing them to be explored, felt, and integrated.
Awareness in the Present Moment
Central to Gestalt therapy is attention to the here and now. Rather than speaking only about experience, we may slow down and notice how something is being lived in real time. This can include observing shifts in the body, changes in emotion, impulses that arise, or relational dynamics between therapist and client. These moments become opportunities for discovery, allowing insight to emerge organically rather than intellectually.
This present-centered awareness often reveals patterns that operate outside of conscious choice. By noticing them as they occur, new possibilities begin to open. What once felt automatic becomes something that can be experienced differently.
Working With Parts and Polarities
Gestalt therapy often explores different aspects of the self that may feel in tension. One part may long for closeness, while another seeks distance. One part may be critical, while another feels vulnerable. Rather than trying to eliminate these differences, Gestalt invites dialogue between them, allowing each to be heard and understood.
Through this process, the self becomes less divided. Conflicting parts are not forced into resolution, but gradually integrated, creating a greater sense of wholeness and internal flexibility.
The Relational Field
Gestalt therapy also recognizes that experience unfolds within relationship. The therapeutic space becomes a living field where patterns of connection, distance, safety, and expression can be noticed as they arise. Rather than remaining abstract, these dynamics are explored directly, allowing for new relational experiences.
This relational awareness can support authenticity, helping you experiment with new ways of expressing yourself, setting boundaries, or remaining present in connection with others.
How Gestalt Therapy Works
Gestalt therapy is experiential and collaborative. Sessions may include reflection, dialogue, somatic awareness, or gentle experiments that help bring experience into clearer focus. The aim is not to direct change, but to deepen awareness. As awareness grows, change often follows naturally.
Over time, this process can support:
greater self-awareness
emotional integration
embodied presence
authenticity in relationships
clarity around needs and boundaries
a deeper sense of wholeness
My work is deeply informed by Gestalt therapy. I have trained for over a decade in Gestalt psychotherapy and am affiliated with the Bay Area Gestalt Institute. This approach continues to shape the way I listen, respond, and engage in therapy, emphasizing presence, relational attunement, and the unfolding of experience in the moment.
